Morphology

  1. וַיִּתֵּ֧ן (vayyitten) – Root: נתן (n-t-n); Form: Verb, wayyiqtol (preterite), 3ms; Translation: “And he gave”; Notes: Indicates a completed action in narrative form.
  2. אַבְרָהָ֛ם (Avraham) – Root: אברם (ʾ-v-r-m); Form: Proper noun, ms; Translation: “Avraham”; Notes: Refers to the patriarch of Israel.
  3. אֶת־כָּל־אֲשֶׁר־לֹ֖ו (ʾet-kol-asher-lo) – Root: כל (k-l), אשר (ʾ-sh-r), לו (l-w); Form: Direct object marker + noun, ms absolute + relative particle + preposition with 3ms suffix; Translation: “all that he had”; Notes: Emphasizes that Avraham bequeathed all his possessions. The direct object marker אֶת explicitly indicates that “all” (כָּל) Avraham owned was transferred to Yitsḥaq, underscoring the totality of the inheritance.
  4. לְיִצְחָֽק (leYitsḥaq) – Root: צחק (ṣ-ḥ-q); Form: Proper noun, ms with preposition; Translation: “to Yitsḥaq”; Notes: Refers to Avraham’s son, the designated heir. This verse highlights Avraham’s designation of Yitsḥaq as the sole heir, emphasizing the covenantal continuity through Yitsḥaq.
